History

Vernon E. Ross, Sr., founder of Ross Hollywood Chapel, began his career as a funeral director in 1914 when he moved to Portland, Oregon. After serving in both World Wars he came home and established Ross Hollywood Chapel in 1942.

During his career he served as the Deputy Coroner for Multnomah County. He was very active in many civic organizations including many veterans’ affairs. So, in 1975, Vernon purchased a small triangle of land just outside of his funeral home and built a veterans memorial and he began the Veteran’s Day Parade to honor all veterans. He held the annual event until his death, which tragically was in 1983 on the day of the Veteran’s Day Parade. Ross Hollywood Chapel recently celebrated it 35^th parade.

Since his death, other funeral establishments have merged with Ross Hollywood Chapel and it has become Ross Hollywood Chapel & Killingsworth St. Johns Lombard Little Chapel of the Chimes.

Vernon E. Ross, Sr. began his funeral home with a commitment to his community to care for them before, during and after a loss and to always honor all veterans. We at Ross Hollywood Chapel & Killingsworth St. Johns Lombard Little Chapel of the Chimes are proud to continue honoring him by upholding his heritage and commitment to the community.
